The Panama Hat, made from the Jijippa plant, has never been made in Panama. It is made in Ecuador. According to the legend, the Panama hat obtained its name from Teddy Roosevelt. During the inauguration of the Panama Canal in 1913, he received an Ecuadorian straw hat as a gift. He thanked them for the gift calling it a “Panama Hat”.

Suppliers of men’s hats are called hatters and milliners are people who supply women’s hats.

Most hats maintain their shape despite being crushed or rolled up because when the hat material is first made, it is steamed and shaped while moist. Then it is allowed to dry on a wooden hat block which traps the shape within the material.

In a New York City auction given by Guernsey’s, the starting bid for the “Wicked Witch of the West’s” hat worn by Margaret Hamilton in “The Wizard of Oz” was $30,000. It eventually sold for an unbelievable price of $170,000.

Abraham Lincoln’s hat is on display at the Smithsonian Institute. His hat size was 7 1/8.

The baseball cap is America’s most significant contribution to the world of modern hats. The current version gained widespread popularity when it was worn by Babe Ruth.

Annie Oakley, Buffalo Bill, Calamity Jane and Wild Bill Hickok all wore Stetson hats.

London’s iconic Black Taxi Cabs have to be tall enough to accommodate a gentleman wearing a top hat, even today.

The original Indiana Jones hat lives at George Lucas’ 5,156 acre Skywalker Ranch in Marin County California. It is priceless.
